Where is the Funding needed to train the Community Radio Sector?

One of the biggest Challenges facing community Broadcasters is the step up to small business and good governance practices. As a largely volunteer based sector it is extremely hard to get volunteers to commit to training and to management positions within Community Radio.

Compounding this is the lack of funding available for Broadcast training and Management training. Funding levels are extremely low and that makes it difficult to get presenters, management and volunteers trained. We should not expect everything to be handed to us fully funded however it would be great to see enough funding available to meet major cost outlays such as RTO fees and trainer costs.

We as a sector along with our sector representatives need to work harder at ensuring that there is an increase in funding to the community broadcast sector to assist in the training of broadcasters, management and volunteers. If Community Broadcasters are to be more accountable and answerable then they need financial assistance to ensure that the training required is delivered to the people who need it and that the training is available to all community broadcasters be they a small rural station or a large urban station.

It may be perceived as politically incorrect but the truth of the matter is it is time that all sections of the community broadcasting sector united and worked together to improve the sector as a whole and stopped being Ethnic, Christian, General Broadcasters or whatever and looked at the bigger picture.

Community Broadcasting is a vibrant and vital part of all our communities it provides entertainment, Community information, emergency broadcasts, local knowledge and so much more to an ever increasing audience and we as a sector need to unite and work together towards improved funding for the entire sector not just any single part of the sector.

The question that needs to be raised over and over again until we get a reasonable response is ………

Whatever happened to the recommendations of the HSCITA report? It’s over 12 months since they were released and still no action
